  1. Why should I hire a lighting designer?

Lighting is one of the most important decisions you will make about your home. Exterior lighting can welcome visitors and protect your family. Interior lighting can inspire, warm a room, direct people, or define space. Light can illuminate practical tasks and beautifully accent art. Most of all, good lighting can bring an inexpressible feeling of well-being. Poor lighting can bring a sense of discomfort or unease. So begin by asking yourself, "how important is lighting in and around my home?"

Studio Lux lighting designers will help you define a creative vision based on your personal tastes for both the practical and aesthetic facets of your home. Our team will bring broad knowledge of over 1000 lighting fixture manufacturers, technical know-how and aesthetic creativity to create precisely the effects you desire for each space in your home. We work closely with your architect, interior designer and general contractor throughout the construction or remodeling process to ensure that your vision for your home is fully realized.

  2. Can a lighting showroom or manufacturer's representative do lighting design?

Lighting showrooms and manufacturer's representatives may offer lighting design as part of their services, but their primary focus is to sell their products. A professional lighting designer, however, is educated to bring a comprehensive blend of technical knowledge, product objectivity, and creativity to develop the perfect design solution for your home. Lighting designers are experts who are professionally certified and able to balance the scientific requirements for lighting with the human need for beauty, warmth and light.

  3. What is the process for working with a Studio Lux lighting designer?

Studio Lux designers like to begin working with you at the conceptual design phase of your home, whether it is a remodel or new construction. By getting involved at this early stage, we have the chance to work with you and the architect to integrate the lighting design into the planned architectural approach. Our lighting team approaches each project design on a "concept to completion" basis, beginning with an initial meeting to define your needs. After the initial design phase, we work closely with you to develop a "fixture vocabulary" which represents your tastes, interests and document your creative vision.

  4. Are you willing to work with individual rooms or specific projects I may have?

Yes. Most homeowners have specific problems, challenges, interests or needs for which they would like lighting design advice. Whether you need lighting for a specific room, or have added new artwork to your home, Studio Lux designers can work on an individual and small project basis to assist you in your efforts.

  5. What is a smart home?

A smart home is defined as the integration of several stand-alone systems in your home, such as lighting, distributed audio, dimming controls, security systems, window shades and climate control. When you integrate these systems, you can achieve multiple functions and moods by the simple push of a button-either on site or remotely. For example, you can have the window shades drop to keep the afternoon sun from overwarming a room, or automatically dim the lights to save energy.

When we design lighting, we create layers of light in a room, and then several scenes for that room. One scene, such as an entertaining scene, might activate all of those layers, while another, such as watching TV, might activate only one. The technology that we use to create lighting control system scenarios is also able to communicate with other systems in the home. We work toward integration of the lighting with all the other systems in the smart home, thereby enhancing the effects of lighting throughout the home.
