  1. How can a lighting designer help an interior designer?

Most interior designers have an excellent sense of how lighting can enhance their designs, but do not have the technical knowledge necessary to select the proper fixtures, lamps, and beam spread required to achieve the desired effects. A lighting designer can translate the desires of the interior designer to create the visual reality of their design.

  2. Can I use an electrician to design my lighting?

Electricians are familiar with codes and requirements that dictate the installation of a fixture, but someone still needs to decide which fixture to use and how it will affect the space once activated. These different requirements include understanding calculations to determine quantity of fixtures, spacing between fixtures, how to create or eliminate shadows, how to wash walls with light. Once answered, the electrician understands the mechanics (the physical limitations of space, the circuitry, etc.) of bringing that vision to fruition.

  3. What stage of my project should I get a lighting designer involved?

As early in the process as possible although we can assist you at any stage of your project. A lighting designer should be onboard from the design development phase of the project. This allows the lighting designer to follow the progress of the architectural and interior design and assist in solving lighting challenges that may arise due to difficult ceiling conditions, or architectural features that limit the type of lighting equipment that can be used. However, we can work with you on all phases of the interior design process, and would be delighted to address any of your needs.

  4. What are the challenges associated with remodeling projects?

Existing ceiling and wall conditions may preclude the use of certain types of lighting fixtures. Power limitations of existing electrical panels, and the inability to extend wiring to new locations can make a remodel very challenging. Studio Lux designers regularly visit jobsites to determine existing conditions prior to creating a lighting design appropriate to the project. Studio Lux is very experienced at working with remodeling projects.
